It’s crazy to think in a couple of months will mark my 2-year post graduating from college and working full time. I remember clear as day, receiving the call to work at my first “big girl” job. I use the term “big girl” to truly emphasize what was at risk. I was placed in a position to make a decision that could impact my career trajectory therefore, I needed to consider many things to fully explore my options and possible outcomes of my decision to accept the offer.
That goes to say, senior year in college looks different for many but I think it’s safe to say during that year we’re all gearing up for what’s next.
For me, that was graduate school or working full time in my career field. That leads me to 4 things to consider when selecting your first job.
Is there an opportunity for mentorship?
In some cases, you will have a chance to learn on the job by daily observations of how things work on your team, best practices of how to communicate, and accessing proper resources. However, a company that offers mentorship opportunities to learn from a senior or “higher” is a company that values personal growth and retention.
People First
One of the few things I needed to gain was a sense of community, especially working at a large company. How can a small or large company place its employees at a high standard all while keeping the vision and mission a priority? It’s simple, treat people like human beings. Consider how often a company speaks about the type of people working at the company and the importance of putting people first to deliver meaningful work.

Work-Life Balance
Balancing work and life can come as a challenge especially at your first job however, working at a company that supports opportunities to work from home to reduce your day-to-day commute or opportunities to take PTO when needed is a company to truly consider.
Your Price Value
When considering your first job, be mindful of what the market says your worth, do your research and determine if the company meets your expectations financially.
