If you are starting out your career in the midst of a pandemic, participating in virtual interviews and orientations, or simply curious about work from home, this post is for you. Similar to many recent grads, I did not anticipate starting a new job from the comfort of my home and experiencing “zoom fatigue” as a result of orienting myself to the company.

However, it is strange, but true, that the most important turning points of life often come at the most unexpected times and in the most unexpected ways.

Starting new things in life can be daunting and exciting. Especially when your experience, goes against the norm. In today’s society, corporate jobs are performing at home with little impact on companies’ goals and measures. Hence the increase in remote and work-from-home positions. At this very moment, remote work no longer sounds unconventional more so the expectation of many. This leads me to share some advice on how to start your first day of remote work.

Clear Desk Work Space

If you were to start work in an office setting, you would realize the use of desk space. Your essentials include a computer, mouse, keyboard, pen, and paper. A light workspace improves your mood and productivity throughout the workday. It’s okay to add your personal touch or elements that add to your personality but be mindful of creating a light and clear desk space to perform virtually.

Dress To Show Up For Yourself

Let’s do away with the idea of dressing to impress your new colleagues. Instead, dress with the intention of your overall well-being and productivity. If you perform well when you’re dressed up, grab that blazer. If you prefer a decent top and bottom comfort, feel free to present yourself in a way the shares your full self.

Turn On Your Camera

Do so with discretion, in other words, read the room. If you are on a call with individuals and cameras are on, follow through and do the same. One of the challenges of being new to a company and working virtually is gaining visibility. Although, in the end, your work will receive recognition. Turning on your camera helps to increase visibility and build trust with your colleagues.

Conduct Informational Interviews

Similar to working in the office and setting up time to connect with leaders and team members, be intentional when blocking time on your colleague’s calendar to virtually connect. Share an introduction and what you would like to gain out of meeting with the individual. These meetings are some of the best ways to orient yourself virtually to a new company and team.

Be A Sponge

There will be many resources to orient yourself to the new job. Take advantage of these resources and learn on an ongoing basis.

  1. This was so helpful . I’m about to transition into a new position and super nervous about staying focus at home and creating that atmosphere that I’m accustomed to with colleagues. Thank you !
