On this very day 2 years ago, what feels like last year I graduated college. With excitement and optimism, ready for what is next in life. You can only prepare but so much for something you have not experienced. However, you can benefit from someone with similar experiences.

I can not prepare you for the real world but I can merely give you advice from my perspective.

As a young woman who graduated with a degree in Health Services Management and later working at Blue Cross NC 3 months post graduating, I endured some experiences and lessons learned while on the job. My first year in the workplace was rejuvenating, intimidating, and experimental. If you have recently graduated, here are some pieces of advice to transition from college to the workplace.

Be Open To Constructive Criticism

Ongoing conversations with your manager to discuss performance and goals may lead you to learn new characteristics of your work style. I learned my challenge with time management and spending too much time on a work assignment and as a result, neglecting the other. You will receive feedback that does not align with your thoughts and ideas you as a professional. However, use constructive criticism as a way to improve and further your career trajectory.

Take Notes

One thing you should always have near and dear to you is a pen and paper, pencil if you prefer. Some people prefer to take notes on the computer but do what works for you. As you begin working at your new job, you will be tasked with understanding a new set of language which includes acronyms and your company’s speak, the type of information communicated. Show your team your ability to be engaged with the work, take notes.

Determine Your Value

There will be many opportunities to take on work items but figure out areas your bring value. Your manager may tasked you with a project that stretches your knowledge and maybe even bring about discomfort. Through those opportunities you can identify your strengths and weakness and have a better understanding of where you bring value.

Be Mindful Of Your Social Media Presence

Social Media is a powerful tool and platform, use it wisely.
